چکیده

The Middle to Upper Paleolithic boundary marks an important threshold in human cultural and biological evolutionwith the establishment of Anatomically Modern Humans and the termination of Neandertal settlement in Eurasia between 40–30 ka C BP. The demographic and cultural processes underlying this ‘‘transition’’ throughout Eurasia are among the most intensively debated issues in Paleolithic Archaeology and Human Paleontology. Of key importance to this debate are issues related to the last surviving Neandertals and the end of the Middle Paleolithic (e.g., Adler et al., 2008) on the one hand, and the first appearance of modern humans (e.g., Jacobi and Higham, 2008), ‘‘modern human behavior’’ (e.g., Pettitt, 2008), and Upper Paleolithic industries (e.g., Adler et al., 2008; Conard and Bolus, 2008; Hoffecker et al., 2008; Pinhasi et al., 2008) on

At the end of the 14C time scale--the Middle to Upper Paleolithic record of western Eurasia.

The dynamics of change underlying the demographic processes that led to the replacement of Neandertals by Anatomically Modern Humans (AMH) and the emergence of what are recognized as Upper Paleolithic technologies and behavior can only be understood with reference to the underlying chronological framework. This paper examines the European chronometric (mainly radiocarbon-based) record for the p...

The Upper Paleolithic Revolution

■ Abstract The transition from the Middle Paleolithic to the Upper Paleolithic is considered one of the major revolutions in the prehistory of humankind. Explanations of the observable archaeological phenomena in Eurasia, or the lack of such evidence in other regions, include biological arguments (the role of Cro-Magnons and the demise of the Neanderthals), as well as cultural-technological, an...

What’s a Mother to Do?

Recent hunter-gatherers display much uniformity in the division of labor along the lines of gender and age. The complementary economic roles for men and women typical of ethnographically documented hunter-gatherers did not appear in Eurasia until the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic. The rich archaeological record of Middle Paleolithic cultures in Eurasia suggests that earlier hominins pursue...

The Implications of the Middle-upper Paleolithic Chronological Boundary in the Caucasus to Eurasian Prehistory

The systematic excavations at Ortvale Klde rockshelter and Dzudzuana Cave in Western Georgia uncovered an occupational sequence spanning the Late Mousterian and Early Upper Paleolithic. The cultural break between the two entities is dated to ca 36–34 Ka BP and reflects a relatively late survival of Neanderthals in this region; similar results were reported from Mezmaiskaya cave on the northern ...

Time for the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition in Europe.

The Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition is a key period of change in the prehistory of the Old World and one of the most studied issues in paleoanthropology, as the nature of the transition(s) is still, after at least a century of archaeological research, largely unknown. Many of the issues at stake in the transition relate to the problem of building a reliable chronology for this period, wh...
